John Barrack
Executive Vice President
CFTPA

John Barrack is the National Executive Vice-President and Counsel at the
Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA), and is based in
its Toronto office. The CFTPA is a national, non-profit trade association
representing over 400 independent film, television and new media producers
across Canada.

John advises the Association and its members with respect to a wide variety
of issues including copyright and related rights matters, broadcaster
relations and the Canadian Television Fund. He has primary responsibility
for handling all aspects of labour relations for the Association and its
members. He also serves as the CFTPA’s general counsel.

In his capacity as strategic leader for the Association John has been at the
forefront in establishing protocol for rights in new digital platforms. As
programming made originally for new digital platforms and the repurposing of
existing content on these platforms was not something originally
contemplated by the current Collective Agreements in place with writers,
actors and directors, amongst others, John has been involved recently in
negotiating terms and conditions of engagement as well as other rights
issues with the various unions and guilds in the film and television sector
for these new platforms.

John is also proud to serve on the Executive Committee of the Board of
Directors of FIAPF, the Federation of International Producer Associations.
Through FIAPF, John co-chairs an annual symposium at the Cannes Film
Festival which addresses current issues facing the film and television
industry worldwide. In May 2007, the issue covered during the symposium
dealt specifically with Internet Exploitation and Rights and the challenges
facing the world’s production community in this regard.

John sits as a director on the boards of the Canadian Retransmission
Collective as well as Shelternet for Abused Women.

Before joining the CFTPA, John was with the law firm of Mathews Dinsdale &
Clark. He has an Honours BA from Trent University and received his LLB from
Dalhousie University.
